Students often struggle making the leap between visual/concrete to abstract. Solving equations symbolically is an entirely new language for students. This course is designed to help students form a conceptual understanding of the algebraic manipulations they are performing when solving equations.
 
Picturing Algebra - Intro
Introduction to the concept of 'balance' in a visual sense.
Discussion of the meaning of 'solve'
Introduction of a 'mystery box' (which will form the concept of a variable)
Introduction of 'weights' (which will form the concept of constants)
